We are celebrating 30 year as a studio, and 20 years on battlefields. So it's a great moment to join. But you know the launch of Battlefield 2042 was a rocky launch. So it was also exciting for that! It's been an exciting six months, I've got to know the team. I've spent a lot of time with our team members, I got to know the other studios that are working on the franchise such as Ripple Effect and the new Battlefield franchise team as well. Unfortunately I was away for Summer Games Fest so I didn't get to play season one when it launched, but I did have a crack on the new map this morning. It's gone down really well, and it's a step in the right direction - but it still feels like a relatively small step though.
1.2 TerrainThe mostcommon terrain systems used for miniature wargamimg employ flocked stryofoamwhich is cut into shapes used to create realistic scale battlefields. The mostcommon system is called GeoHex, a series of modular terrain systems which arepre-cut into plateau-shaped hill segments. For game play, each hill section isconsidered to be one level high. Units within 40 yards of a hill's edge (themeeting line between the slope and flat hill-top) may spot and be spotted bythose on lower levels, otherwise they are considered to be too far away fromthe edge of the plateau to establish line of sight. Treating gaming hills asthe plateaus they resemble is usually the best way interpret these features.This also creates dead ground along the bases of most hills, which is anotherrealistic effect. To create roadways, players may either buy the GeoHexroad sets, or use varying widths of masking tape to show main and secondaryroads. Colored felt or cloth may be used to cover or outline the locations ofwoods, towns and fields. Scale trees and buildings may then be placed on theseoutlines. Lichen can be used to create hedges or areas of brush. Players maywant to modularize changeable terrain, using hexagonal terrain sections tocreate the outlines of woods and square sections to create the outlines ofbuilding zones. This allows the selective removal of portions of the terraindue to fire effects and other actions. All terrain removal rules assume thatplayers are using modular terrain sections which are roughly 60 yards across.Players not using modular terrain will want to estimate terrain removal basedon this value. Each segment of game-board buildings actually representsthe outline of a block of buildings. Troops inside these areas are not actuallyinside a single building, they are actually in a built up area which includeeverything from fence-lines, plots of land and taverns to churches, cemeteriesand government buildings. Make sure to consult the Terrain Chart below forgeneral guidance on the game-specific characteristics of various terrain types.Players are encouraged to use this as a basis for creating their owninterpretation of basic battlefield features.
A model for crack propagation in thin ice formations was validated. Confirmed also were analytical procedures for predicting the Rayleigh wave signal as a function of target, substrata conditions, and distances. The first phase of a site evaluation process for helicopter landing and take-off operations, and a prototype air-transportable shelter suited to very cold environments were both completed. Additionally, a final report was published on tests of polyurethane-coated nylon fabrics and nonshed adhesives compounds for construction on wet, freeze-thaw soils.
The Army's research and development effort for military construction and engineering encompasses a variety of subjects, including soil and rock mechanics structural systems, weapons effects, mobility, and the problems of conducting military operations in cold regions. During the year the Long-Range Pavement Research Program continued with the establishment of interim standards for the design of an all-bituminous surface for roads and airfields, development of a pavement design that can use all types of structural material, and a data bank that correlates compatibility of construction techniques, quality control, guide specifications, and design concepts for pavement systems. Army engineers have now tested precracked steel-fiber reinforced concrete beams that had been subjected to flowing salt solutions and have completed work on a prototype computer model for predicting load-carrying capacity of cracked steel-fiber concrete slabs-on-grade. Techniques have also been developed to form inflatable fibrous concrete domes up to fifteen feet in diameter. Other significant engineering research accomplishments included a series of three, ten-ton nitromethane explosive tests to develop computer techniques for simulating underground detonations of nuclear weapons at shallow depths. Progress was made in developing the Automated Engineering and Architectural Design System, and work was completed on a computer program that determines bridging requirements in tactical situations. 2ff7e9595c
