‘Fulger McQueen’ is a contemporary reimagining of the ‘Snow White’ story. It follows our protagonist, an eloquent, adorable dog who grows up in a world of waste and junk food. Fulger spends most of his time trying to find ways to sneak into stores that sell high-priced food to eat for free with his hungry gang of friends, until one day he meets Snow White, who has been living on the streets since being kicked out by her parents. She shows Fulger how he can help save her with his talents as an artist until they can figure out how she can support herself with her art once more. "Fulger McQueen" takes place in the world of Waste, an environment where animals live in squalor, scavenging for scraps of food to survive, and hedonism rules the day. A lot of the novel deals with the protagonist Fulger desperately trying to survive with his friends Bumby and Mojo on the streets of Waste. The novel is written mostly from Fulger's first person point-of-view (he is known as "Fulger" for short) though multiple other characters also narrate parts of the story. In an interview on "The Huffington Post", author Jason Reynolds explains that he finds true joy in writing about the cultures of people who allow themselves to feel vulnerable. In regards to "Fulger McQueen", Reynolds hoped to create a fun, entertaining story that also tackles the topics of class and art. The book is dedicated to people like Jason's grandfather, who saw beauty in things others may have thrown away. Jason has said that he started writing this book when he was 14 or 15 years old, at Summer Writing Institute (SWI) at Johns Hopkins University. The instructors at SWI guided Jason to take his story idea, which originally focused on a king, and instead make it about a dog.
