The ancient Japanese believed that Shura was a goddess of war with the power to decide the fate of every living being. She would appear in this world only during times of great strife, and it is said that when she appears on earth more blood will be spilled than ever before. This week, her time has come again. It is the year 1181, and Japan's greatest warlord, Taira no Kiyomori, has changed the flow of history by secretly seizing control of the country. The samurai rebel Yoshitsune must now fight his way back to Kyoto to reclaim the city, but he is being hunted down by Kiyomori's most trusted warrior. Meanwhile, a mysterious young woman named Shura has arrived in Kyoto to begin her own battle against Taira no Kiyomori. She has only one goal--to kill Yoshitsune... The series' original concept was created by Keita Amemiya, who also directed the show's first episode. The show's art director is Takeshi Takakura, with the series director being Satoshi Nishimura. Both men had worked on previous anime title together, "Zone of the Enders", another Sunrise production. The music in the series is composed by Takeo Miratsu ("Mobile Suit Gundam SEED", "Tsubasa Chronicle") and Yoshihisa Hirano ("Cowboy Bebop"), while Norimitsu Kaihō (who previously did character design for "Burn-Up Scramble", "Heaven's Lost Property" and screenplay for "Future Diary") handled the screenplay. On January 24, 2015, it was announced on "Shurakai no Toki 19" official website that the anime television series has been green-lit for a second season. The report was later followed by news of the first promotional video. The season's opening theme is "Loop" by Yuko Taniguchi starting from episode 1, and the ending theme , both performed by Quiz! on episodes 2 through 21. Crunchyroll acquired streaming rights to the series across its website and iOS app. Bandai released two soundtrack albums for the series titled "Shura no Toki 19 Original Soundtrack" and "Shura no Toki 19 Character Song Best Album". Each album includes 22 tracks, respectively. The first album was released on December 10, 2013, while the second album was released on January 7, 2014.The opening theme for "Shura no Toki 19" is composed by Taku Iwasaki ("Soul Eater", "Black Butler", "Noragami") and performed by Faylan. The ending themes are performed by Haruka Tomatsu ("Sword Art Online", "Mobile Suit Gundam AGE") during the first 13 episodes and were composed by Taku Iwasaki and Megumi Shiraishi ("Puella Magi Madoka Magica").
